In the episode ''[[Alola, New Adventures!]]'', we learn that Ash and his mother have won a vacation to the Alola region, and he travels there with her. He runs the [[Alola Trainer School#In the anime|Pokémon School]] on [[Mele-Mele]]. Ash meets the students [[Lillie#In the anime|Lillie]], [[Kiawe#In the anime|Kiawe]], [[Sophie#In the anime|Sophee]], [[Lanai#In the anime|Lanai]], [[Lanai#In the anime|Lanai]], [[Lanai#In the anime|Lanai]], and [[Maho#In the anime|Maho]], with whom he quickly becomes friends and who show him around. Fabian from the Æther Foundation is after it, but the children, with Gladion's help, are able to protect it for the time being. Over time, Cloudy evolves into a Solgaleo. With his help, Ash and company rescue Samantha, who was killed by Anego, an Ultra Beast. After the rescue, Solgaleo says goodbye. In Anego, an Ultra Beast, Ash and his classmates are finally appointed Ultra Guardians by Samantha, as she considers them capable of capturing the Ultra Beasts appearing in Alola. Ash is the first to capture [[Masskito (anime)|Masskito]], before capturing [[Ash's Agoyon|Venicro]] in ''[[Love at First Sight!]]'', which accompanies him from then on as a team member.
Finally, Ash goes to [[Ula-Ula]] to take part in another island trial. Ash survives the preliminary round, a [[Battle Royale]], with Pikachu's help. After defeating [[Fabian#In the anime|Fabian]] in the first round, [[Ash's Rowlet]] [[Tali#In the anime|Tali's]] manages to defeat [[Silvarro (anime)|Silvarro]]. Ash now faces [[Bromley#In the anime|Bromley]], against whom he had previously been helpless in ''[[The Merchant of Destruction!]]''. Here, too, the young trainer prevails and thus reaches the finals – where he faces none other than his rival Gladion.

In the [[Legend? Go! Friends? Go!|sequel episode]], Ash sees a [[Lugia (anime)|Lugia]] appearing in [[Orania City]] and pursues it. From a ledge, he jumps onto its back, where he shortly afterwards encounters [[Goh]], who has also jumped onto the Legendary Pokémon. The Pokémon allows the boys to ride on its back as it flies across the sky and dives deep into the sea. The shared experience leads to a bond between the two boys. After Lugia disappears, Ash and Goh return to [[Professor Cherry]]'s laboratory, where they inform everyone present about their encounter with Lugia. Impressed by the report, the professor offers them the opportunity to assist him in his research. Ash and Goh agree and move into the laboratory together, where they live from then on.
In ''[[The Mysterious Tower of Ivysaur!]]'', Ash and Goh receive their first mission: to investigate the sudden mass appearance of [[Bulbasaur (Anime)|Bulbasaur]] and [[Ivysaur (Anime)|Ivysaur]]. To help them, the professor gives them both a Rotom, which moves into Ash and Goh's smartphones, giving them both a Smart Rotom.
After following the Bulbasaur and Ivysaur to the Gym, which is a construction site, the boys are attacked by the Team Rocket trio, who want to kidnap the Grass-type Pokémon. Jessie and James have been sent powerful Pokémon by a machine, but they are no match for Ash's Pikachu. After the villains are shot into the furnace, Ash and Goh discover that the Venusaurs have gone to the Gym to find higher ground where they can absorb sunlight. After sunbathing, they evolve into Venusaur.
To investigate Dynamaxing, Ash and Goh travel to Galar for the first time in "Oops, Oops!!" While waiting for the train to the Wild Area, they decide to eat some scones at a shop in Score City. After encountering a Oops, who befriends Goh and follows them unnoticed, Ash and Goh take the train to complete their mission.

Soon after, Ash catches [[Ash's Dragonite|Dragonite]] and [[Ash's Gengar|Gengar]], two powerful Pokémon that excel in battles.
During Ash's second visit to the [[Galar]] region, Pikachu [[Gigamaxes]] for the first time in ''[[The Rise of the Greatest!]]'' to battle the Dynamaxed [[Kamalm (Anime)|Kamalm]] attacking the [[Score Stadium]]. Pikachu successfully attacks it, causing it to transform back and calm down. Later, it competes in a training battle against [[Delion#In the anime|Delion]]'s [[Charizard (anime)|Charizard]], with both opponents Gigantamaxing each other. Pikachu, however, has no chance and loses. Ash consequently decides to participate in the [[Coronation World Championships]] in order to one day have a rematch with the champion.
In the episode ''[[End of the Line: Coronation!]]'', Ash finally registers to participate in the Coronation World Championships and chooses his first opponent from the Regular Division to improve his ranking. The system assigns him the [[Electric]] Trainer Viliana, who [[Major Bob#In the anime|Major Bob]] is filling in as Gym Leader in his absence. Ash initially pits Pikachu against Raichu, but Raichu quickly struggles with its powerful opponent, prompting Ash to swap it for Ash's Gengar. After Raichu defeats Raichu and is defeated by Electronite, Pikachu faces off against Raichu and defeats it after a fierce exchange. His defeat activates Electronite's ability, Final Smash, which Pikachu can protect himself from with Electronite. The victory places Ash at 3,763rd place in the rankings.
In ''Dream What You Want to Dream!'', Pikachu defeats Seiya's Meganite, allowing Ash to advance to 1,512th place.
In ''[[The Mysterious Egg!]]'', Pikachu defeats Hashiba's [[Tauros (Anime)|Tauros]], after which Ash's rank-up is not shown. In the same episode, he receives an egg from which a [[Riolu (Anime)|Riolu]] hatches, which Ash ultimately catches.
During Ash's second visit with Goh to the [[Sinnoh]] region in ''[[Team Rocket's Vacation!]]'', Pikachu is captured by Team Rocket elite members led by [[Matori]] while attempting to rescue Pokémon they had stolen. Only with the help of [[Jessie]], [[James]], and [[Team Rocket's Meowth|Meowth]], who are in disguise, are Pikachu and all the other stolen Pokémon freed, forcing Matori and her crew to retreat.
In ''[[Sword and Shield: Slumbering Forest!]]'', Ash and Goh end up in the [[Slumbering Forest]] after chasing a [[Scoppel (anime)|Scoppel]] that stole one of their scones. Goh catches it, but is separated from Ash. While wandering through the forest, Ash encounters Zacian, and Goh encounters [[Zamazenta (anime)|Zamazenta]]. However, the two are immune to all of their Pokémon's attacks. The boys, much like the protagonist and his rival in the games, faint due to a mysterious, increasingly thick fog. When they awaken, they leave the forest.
In ''[[Sword and Shield: Will Eternal Bring the End?!]]'', Goh, accompanied by [[Sania#In the anime|Sania]], visits the forest again to ask Zacian and Zamazenta for help in ending the Dark Night. They follow the illusions of the two Pokémon and reach an altar in the middle of the forest, where they find the [[Rusty Shield|Rusty Shield]] and the [[Rusty Sword|Rusty Sword]], which Goh takes. The two then set off for [[Claw City]].
In the following episode, Riolu evolves into Lucario during a battle against Rose's Pokémon and learns [[Aura Sphere]], which it uses to easily defeat the opposing Pokémon. At the end of the episode, after defeating [[Edinburgh (anime)|Edinburgh]], the boys visit the forest again and return the two relics to the shrine, hoping to see Zacian and Zamazenta again.

After the tournament ends, Ash announces that he will embark on a new journey alone to learn more about Pokémon and become a Pokémon Master. After leaving the Cherry Institute, Ash says goodbye to Goh in "[[This Could Be the Beginning... of Something Big!]]," who wishes him well.
Ash and Pikachu finally encounter an injured Latias in the following episode, whom they help and protect from the Rocket Trio, after which Latias secretly follows them. During his new journey, Ash reunites with Misty and Brock, who join him again, and regularly brings old Pokémon into his team, with whom he has several adventures. Ash reunites with Cilan and the Squirtle Pack, as well as Ash's Lapras. In "[[Ash and Latios!]]," Latias appears to Ash once again and asks for his help in protecting his friend Latios from Pokémon hunters. This succeeds, and the two fly away.
