On December 16, 2022, it was announced that Ash's journey would end in a finale that offered a glimpse into his future,[1] before a new series without Ash in the lead role began in April 2023; the finale is called Pokémon: To Be a Pokémon Master, and it spans eleven episodes.

History

Background

Ash as a toddler

Before Ash became a Pokémon Trainer, he lived with his mother in a home in Pallet Town.

Wild Pokémon inspired Ash to become a trainer, as shown in a flashback in the episode "Seeing the Forest for the Trees!": As a young boy, Ash got lost in a forest during a storm. Terrified, he sought shelter in a hollow tree trunk. The Pokémon kept him company and encouraged him, helping him realize how great Pokémon are.

Serena and Ash as children at summer camp

Ash eventually attends a Pokémon summer camp organized by Professor Oak. In "Giving Chase at the Rhyhorn Race!," he is shown to bandage the knee of the young Serena with a handkerchief after she is attacked by a Poliwag, then he helped Serena up and led her out of the forest.

As shown in the episode "The Ties that Bind," Ash and his former rival Gary were childhood friends before they went fishing in the same river, hooked on the same Poké Ball. Both refused to give up and pulled on the line until the ball broke in half. Since then, they have each carried their half around as a good luck charm.

Pokémon the Series: The Beginning

Ash at the start of his journey

Ash Ketchum is ten years old when he begins his journey as a Pokémon Trainer after obtaining his license. He dreams of becoming the world's greatest Pokémon Master. However, Ash oversleeps and misses an event from Professor Oak where Pokémon Trainers could choose either Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle; the last trainer to arrive before Ash was his rival, Gary Oak. The only Pokémon that Oak has left is a Pikachu, who is somewhat difficult to control. Ash and Pikachu struggle to get along at first, but they would become closer after an intense situation where they are chased by a group of Spearow. Pikachu uses Thunder Shock chases away the Spearows but also Misty's bicycle by accident, so Misty decides to accompany Ash during his journey until he can get her a new bicycle.

It does not take long until Ash gets a Pokémon for the first time, a Caterpillar, which quickly evolves into Metapod after battling what would become Ash's third Pokémon, Pidgey. Metapod evolves into Butterfly shortly afterward, as it wanted to impress Misty.

Ash goes to Pewter City and battles the first Gym Leader, Brock, whom he is able to defeat. Brock has a dream to become the greatest Pokémon breeder, so he joins Ash on his journey.

Ash has caught more Pokémon over time, including Bulbasaur, who is against evolving; Charmander (later a Charmeleon and eventually a Charizard), whose life was saved by Ash; and Squirtle, which lost its place as leader in the Squirtle Squad to accompany Ash. Ash also catches a Krabby, which would later evolve into a Kingler during the Indigo League, where Ash goes to after collecting all eight Gym Badges of the Kanto region. Ash also obtains a Muk, but it prefers to live with Professor Oak. Ash manages to catch thirty Tauros as well as a Primeape and left the latter with Anthony. Ash also released his Butterfree on the way so that it could join other Butterfrees.

Ash is pursued constantly by the Team Rocket trio, consisting of Jessie, James, and a talking Meowth, who try to steal Pokémon, especially Ash's Pikachu.

A disappointed Ash after his defeat in the Indigo League

Ash meets Ritchie at the Indigo League, and the two of them become good friends. However, Ash loses to Ritchie because his Charizard would not obey him.

At the end of Ash's journey in Kanto, his Pidgeotto evolves into Pidgeot, whom Ash releases so that it can protect other Pidgeys and Pidgeottos.

Ash, Misty, and Brock set off for the Orange Islands, where there are four Gym Badges to be won on various islands. On Valencia Island, Ash and his friends meet the regional Pokémon Professor, Professor Ivy, whom Brock has a crush on, so he leaves Ash and Misty briefly to work as an assistant for Professor Ivy and help her research Pokémon.

Ash and Misty are later joined by a Pokémon Watcher named Tracey. A short time later, Ash catches a Lapras, on which the characters travel between the Orange Islands. On Grapefruit Island, there is a Snorlax busy eating all the fruit, and with enough effort, Ash manages catch it.

Ash after his victory against Drake

After collecting all four Gym Badges of the Orange Islands, Ash arrives on Pummelo Island, where he faces the Orange League Champion, Drake. After great effort, Ash wins the match and earns a place in the Hall of Fame. Ash finally gains trust and obedience from Charizard during their journey through the Orange Islands.

After their victory, Ash, Misty, and Tracey start to return to Kanto. Along the way, the characters encounter a horde of Lapras, and Ash releases his Lapras to join the others.

Back at Pallet Town, the characters unexpectedly encounter Brock, who is very depressed when asked why he is no longer with Professor Ivy. Tracey, a big fan of Professor Oak, decides to stay with Oak to assist him, while Brock decides to rejoin Ash and Misty.

Pokémon the Series: Gold & Silver

Ash deems it to be a very difficult decision, and he sheds a few tears before saying goodbye to Charizard.

In the episode "Good 'Quil Hunting," Ash manages to catch a Cyndaquil, and he uses it to battle Bugsy in "Gettin' the Bugs Out" and receive his second Gym Badge.

In Hoenn, Ash's goal is to win against eight Gym Leaders before he can participate in the Ever Grande Conference. In "Hoenn Alone!," Ash takes Pikachu to Professor Birch because the Team Rocket trio has caused his Pikachu to suffer from a power overload. Pikachu later escapes from Professor Birch's Laboratory and attacks Ash because it has lost control. Ash is able to calm Pikachu, demonstrating their close bond. After Pikachu accidentally destroys May's bicycle in the process of escaping from a machine that Team Rocket had trapped him, May decides to join Ash on his journey,.

Ash takes on a mentoring role to May and teaches her the basics to being a Pokémon Trainer, such as how to catch Pokémon in "A Ruin with a View."

Ash eventually travels with May to her hometown, Petalburg City, where he learns that May's father, Norman, is the Gym Leader there. It is also where May's younger brother, Max, joins the two of them.

On the trip to Rustboro City, Ash, May, and Max meet up with Brock in "You Never Can Taillow," and Ash captures a Taillow.

In "Tree's a Crowd," Ash befriends a Treecko that wants to join him, so he catches it.

Before arriving in Rustboro City, Ash and his friends watch a Pokémon Contest, where his Pikachu also learns Iron Tail from a Pokémon Coordinator named Chaz. Ash then challenges the Gym Leader, Roxanne, and defeats her. During the Gym battle, Ash demonstrates his ability to react spontaneously to situations, even under pressure, and he surprises Roxanne by revealing that Pikachu has mastered Iron Tail. Ash also has Pikachu destroy the battlefield, to the detriment of the Gym Leader, and finds a way to defeat the previously unknown Pokémon Nosepass.

Ash and his friends travel to Dewford Town, where Ash intends to face the second Gym Leader, Brawly, but loses to him in "Brave the Wave" due to Brawly's physical attack style. After losing, Ash goes to train on the island and captures a Corpish, then he challenges Brawly again and wins.

In "Sky High Gym Battle," Ash has his Gym battle against the sixth Gym Leader, Winona, and Ash is able to win, with help from his Swellow.

Further into his journey, Ash and his friends often try to thwart the plans of Team Magma and Team Aqua, such as in "The Spheal of Approval" and "Fight for the Meteorite." In "Gaining Groudon" and "The Scuffle of Legends," a showdown occurs when Kyogre and Groudon are summoned. Ash also encounters Drake in "Vanity Affair," whom he fights and loses from being too arrogant. Ash competes in the Ever Grande Conference starting in "Saved by the Beldum," where he meets Morrison and defeats him in battle, but Ash ultimately loses to Tyson. Ash then returns to Pallet Town alone because May wants to travel to Johto, while Brock and Max want to return to their respective hometowns.

In "The Scheme Team," after losing to Agatha, an Elite Four member filling in as the Gym Leader of Viridian City, Ash learns from Scott about the battle facilities that were built in Kanto during Ash's absence as part of the Battle Frontier. In the battle against Brandon for the last Frontier Symbol, Ash encounters some problems: Even before his first attempt, Ash's body is overtaken by the King of Pokélantis. The possessed Ash uses Sceptile in the battle, and fights without regard for his Pokémon, and therefore loses. After losing, Ash catches an Aipom, which had previously stolen his hat. In the second attempt to defeat Brandon, Ash also loses, as his Sceptile is defeated by Brandon's Registeel. In the second rematch, Ash receives help from his old partners Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charizard. Ash finally defeats Brandon after his Pikachu defeats Brandon's Regice in "Pace – The Final Frontier!." Having won, Ash is eligible to become a Frontier Brain, but he declines the position.

In "Once More with Reeling!," Ash competes against May in the Terracotta Town Contest Festival, and the battle ends in a draw. When Ash returns to Pallet Town in "Home Is Where the Start Is!," he learns about Sinnoh from Gary and sets off by ship with Pikachu, but he is also joined by Aipom involuntarily.

Suddenly, dark clouds gather, and strong electrical charges trigger an electromagnetic pulse, depriving Pikachu of the ability to use Electric-type moves. Ash realizes it must have been caused by a strange Pokémon in the dark cloud, later revealed to be Zekrom.

Professor Juniper then takes Ash, his mother, and Professor Oak to the Pokémon Laboratory in Avenitia. Once there, Ash meets Trip, who is just about to choose his new Pokémon. Trip is surprised to learn that Ash is from Pallet Town in Kanto, which sparks his interest and also a rivalry with Ash. Pikachu later regains his Electric-type abilities.

Ash wins against Faba in the first round. Ash then battles Hau in the quarterfinals, where his Ash's Rowlet manages to defeat Hau's Decidueye. Ash now faces Guzma, and although Ash had been previously helpless against him in "The Dealer of Destruction!," he manages to defeat Guzma and proceed to the finals, where Ash faces off against his rival Gladion.

Ash and Pikachu receive a trophy for winning the Manalo Conference in "Enter the Champion!"

The battle begins in "Final Rivals!," with Pikachu's victory against Gladion's Silvally, which had previously defeated Ash's newly evolved Melmetal. After a draw between Ash's Pikachu and Gladion's Zoroark, Ash sends out his Lycanroc, and Gladion also sends out his Lycanroc. Ash's Lycanroc defeats Gladion's, making Ash the winner. Ash receives a trophy at the award ceremony and is the first to be recognized as the Pokémon Champion of Alola.

After the Manalo Conference ends, Ash is unsure what to do next. However, after being told by Olivia that it is important to understand the wider world, Ash decides to return to Pallet Town and travel the world. After saying goodbye to his friends in "Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!," Ash boards a plane to Kanto and leaves all of his Pokémon except Pikachu under Professor Kukui's care.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Ash, Pikachu, and Goh in "Legend? Go! Friends? Go!"

In "Legend? Go! Friends? Go!," Ash sees a Lugia in Vermilion City and pursues it. From a ledge, Ash jumps on to Lugia's back, where he soon meets Goh, who has also jumped onto it. Lugia allows Ash and Goh to ride on its back as it flies across the sky and dives deep into the sea, and the shared experience leads to a bond between Ash and Goh. After Lugia disappears, Ash and Goh go to Cerise Laboratory, where they inform everyone present about their encounter with Lugia. Ash and Goh agree to help Professor Cerise in his research, so both of them move into the laboratory.

In "Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower!," Ash and Goh receive their first mission, which is to investigate the sudden appearance of several Bulbasaurs and Ivysaurs. Both Ash and Goh receive a Rotom in their smartphones to assist them, creating a Rotom Phone. When Ash and Goh follow the the Bulbasaurs and Ivysaurs to the Gym, which is a construction site, the two of them are attacked by the Team Rocket trio, who want to kidnap the Pokémon. After Team Rocket is defeated again, Ash and Goh discover that the Venusaurs have gone to the Gym to find higher ground where they can absorb sunlight.

To investigate Dynamaxing, Ash and Goh travel to Galar for the first time in "Settling the Scorbunny!". While Ash and Goh wait for the train to the Wild Area, they decide to eat some scones at a shop in Wyndon. After encountering a Scorbunny, who befriends Goh and follows them unnoticed, Ash and Goh take the train to complete their mission. Soon after, Ash catches Dragonite and Gengar, two powerful Pokémon that excel in battles.

During Ash's second visit to the Galar region, Pikachu Gigantamaxes for the first time in "The Climb to Be the Very Best!" to battle the Dynamaxed Drednaw attacking the Wyndon Stadium. Ash's Pikachu later competes against Leon's Charizard, with both sides taking on a Gigantamax form, although Pikachu loses. Ash consequently decides to participate in the World Coronation Series to have rematch with the Pokémon Champion some day.

In "Destination: Coronation!," Ash finally registers to participate in the World Coronation Series and chooses his first opponent from the Normal Class to improve his ranking. The system assigns Ash the Electric Trainer Visquez, who is substituting for Lt. Surge during his absence. Ash wins the battle and ranks at 3,763 in the World Coronation Series.

In "Dreams Are Made of These!," Ash has a battle against Oliver, whom he wins against after his Pikachu defeats Stanium, a Meganium belonging to Oliver, and his rank in the World Coronation Series advances to 1,512.

In "Caring for a Mystery!," Ash wins a battle against Hayden, after his Pikachu defeats Hayden's Tauros, but Ash's updated rank is not shown. Ash also receives an egg from which a Riolu hatches.

During Ash's second visit to the Sinnoh region in "A Little Rocket R & R!," going with Goh, Pikachu is captured by Team Rocket elite members led by Matori while attempting to rescue Pokémon they had stolen. Pikachu and the other stolen Pokémon are only freed with the help of a disguised Jessie, James, and Meowth, forcing Matori and her crew to retreat.

In "Sword and Shield, Slumbering Weald!," Ash and Goh end up in the Slumbering Weald after chasing a Bunnelby that stole one of their scones. Goh catches Bunnelby, but he is separated from Ash. While wandering through the forest, Ash encounters Zacian, and Goh encounters Zamazenta, but both Pokémon are unaffected by all the attacks from Ash and Goh's Pokémon. Much like the player character and his rival in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, both Ash and Goh faint from a mysterious, increasingly thick fog. When Ash and Goh awaken, they leave the Slumbering Weald.

In "Sword and Shield: "From Here to Eternatus!"," Goh, accompanied by Sonia, revisit the Slumbering Weald to ask Zacian and Zamazenta for help in ending the Darkest Day. They follow the illusions of the two Pokémon and reach an altar in the middle of the forest, where they find the Rusty Shield and the Rusty Sword, which Goh takes. The two then set off for Hammerlocke.

In "Sword and Shield... The Legends Awaken!," Ash's Riolu evolves into Lucario during a battle against Rose's Pokémon and learns Aura Sphere, which it uses to easily defeat the opposing Pokémon. At the end of the episode, after defeating Eternatus, Ash and Goh revisit the forest and return both the Rusty Shield and Rusty Sword, hoping to see Zacian and Zamazenta again.

Ash's second battle against Bea is followed by a winning streak, so Ash's ranking in the World Coronation Series continues to rise. One day, in "Thrash of the Titans!," Ash receives a letter from Iris, who challenges Ash to a battle. Ash happily accepts the invitation, and when he arrives, he is surprised to discover that Iris is now the Pokémon Champion of Unova. Ash emerges victorious from a tough battle and thus achieves the Ultra Class. Ash's first opponent in the Ultra Class is Volkner, whom he defeats. Ash learns from Volkner that Cynthia is also participating in the World Coronation Series and has reached the Master Class. Knowing some of his potential future opponents, Ash seeks help from Korrina, as he wants to learn how to Mega Evolve with Lucario. Ash receives a Mega Glove and manages to find a Lucarionite before receiving a message about an upcoming battle with Bea, whom he defeats with the help of his Mega Lucario.

Ash and his Gengar work on Gigantamaxing, as seen in "The Winding Path to Greatness!"

Together with Allister, Ash now also attempts to master Gigantamaxing. Ash cooks Max Mushrooms and Max Soup for Gengar, who develops the ability and enables Ash to defeat Marnie.

Through his victories, Ash receives increasing press attention. In Lumiose City, Ash meets Clemont and Bonnie again and defeats Drasna, allowing Ash to advance to the Master Class. After meeting Greninja again and training Lucario's Aura with him, Ash proceeds to battle Raihan, whom he defeats after a tough battle. Afterward, only Ash, the Pokémon Champions of the various regions, and Alain remain.

During a visit to the Crown Tundra, Ash meets Lillie and her family again, who find Mohn again. The group travels together to Alola, where there is a celebration with the Alolan friends and Pokémon. There, Ash takes part in a special Battle Royale, designed to encourage him to win the Masters Eight Tournament as a representative of the Alola region.

After a tough training session with his Pokémon on the grounds of Professor Oak's Laboratory and Paul, Ash travels back to Galar to participate in the tournament. His first opponent is Steven Stone, whom he finally defeats using Pikachu's 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt.

Ash and his party with the trophy, after winning the World Coronation Series in "Partners in Time!"

In the semifinals, Ash faces Cynthia, and his Mega Lucario defeats her Garchomp, allowing Ash to advance to the finals and face Leon. At the start of the battle, Leon surprises Ash by allowing him to use Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and Dynamax. At the climax of the encounter, Eternatus appears in the stadium and grants them both an extra charge of Dynamax Energy. Ash emerges victorious, receives a trophy, and is ranked Monarch of the competition.

After the tournament ends, Ash announces that he will embark on a new journey alone to learn more about Pokémon and become a Pokémon Master. After leaving the Cerise Laboratory, Ash says goodbye to Goh in "This Could be the Start of Something Big!."

Ash and Pikachu encounter an injured Latias in "The Road Most Traveled!." The two of them help Latias and protect it from the Team Rocket trio, then Latias secretly follows them afterward. During his new journey, Ash reunites with Misty and Brock, and brings old Pokémon into his team, with whom he has several adventures. Ash reunites with Cilan and the Squirtle Squad, as well as his Lapras. In "Ash and Latios!," Latias appears to Ash once again and asks for his help in protecting Latios from Pokémon hunters. Ash helps the Eon duo, then both Latias and Latios fly away.

Ash and Pikachu in their final appearance, "The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!"

Ash makes his final appearance in "The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!," where he decides to travel to Pallet Town, while Misty and Brock return to Cerulean City and Pewter City, respectively, but announces that he wants to travel again there. He meets Tracey and Pidgeot again, who rejoins his team. He also encounters Gary again, who asks Ash how close he is to his goal now that he is a monarch. Ash ponders the question for a while by a lake and finally answers Gary that a Pokémon Master is someone all Pokémon trust, but because Ash has not earned Latios' trust, he still has work to do. Ash decides to set off alone with Pikachu once more.

Personality

Starting from the first episode, "Pokémon - I Choose You!," it is clear that Ash wants to become a Pokémon Master and does all he can to meet that goal. When Ash says goodbye to his mother, Delia Ketchum, he seems happy to leave and begin his Pokémon journey. Ash's courage is evident during the first battle against Team Rocket.

Ash is very ambitious and determined. When Ash first visits a town or city with a Gym, he wants to go to the Gym immediately, without visiting the city's attractions, as his friends often want to do. He is also tempted to challenge supposedly stronger opponents, such as Alder, the Champion of Unova.

Ash often does not think before he acts, such as when he used his Caterpillar against Pidgeot, which sees it as prey. He wants Misty to like his Caterpillar and Metapod, disregarding Misty's fear of Bug-type Pokémon. There have also been cases in battles where Ash has used a Pokémon with a type disadvantage or uses attacks that are ineffective. Ash later trains very diligently, especially for Gym battles and leagues like in Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos, to develop new moves and strategies. Nevertheless, in Alola, it seems as if Ash is still often too impetuous or careless, such as when a Grubbin pinches him on the nose from getting too close. In "Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?," despite his extensive training experience, Ash needs all Ultra Balls to capture the Ultra Beast Poipole.

Ash never recognizes when love is involved, such as when advances are being made towards him. Ash does not seem to notice that Serena likes him a lot, and he also seemed awkward and clumsy in "romantic" situations with Misty. Ash also does not seem to recognize or reciprocate Anabel's and Angie's feelings. Ash could be described as aromantic in general.

Ash has a strong sense of justice and a desire to help. He tries to support every Pokémon Trainer on their journey and help any Pokémon in need while also trying to understand and respect their feelings. When Ash encounters villainous teams like Team Rocket, he does whatever he can to stop their plans, even if Ash is endangered in the process.

Ash trusts his Pokémon and friends. He also sees the best in every individual, like when he admires Clemont's inventions, despite them usually exploding and failing. Ash befriends most characters, due to being open-hearted and good-natured, and several Legendary Pokémon have recognized this quality of Ash's. Ash is also naive and good-natured, and like his friends, Ash often realizes only too late when Team Rocket appears in disguise or is trying to trick him.

Ash using aura in Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

At the beginning of his journey, Ash seems to struggle with an inferiority complex based on his rivalry with Gary, so he is often overconfident about his victories. For example, in Hoenn, Ash is reprimanded by Drake, and on the Orange Islands by Prima. Ash was also very hot-headed at first, immediately reacting with irascible responses to taunts from Gary or Misty. After defeats, such as against Ritchie, Ash becomes very depressed, so his friends try to cheer him up. Ash eventually matures over time, analyzes his mistakes in defeats, and usually congratulates his rivals on their victory.

Ash has the unique ability to sense and manipulate Aura, like in the film Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, and this Aura is how Ash manages to find Riolu in "Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! (Part 1)." Finally, Ash also receives a Riolu, which only wanted to hatch in his presence after sensing his aura.

Relationships

Ash's Pikachu

Ash hugging his Pikachu in "Pikachu's Goodbye"

As shown in "Pokémon - I Choose You!," Ash and his Pikachu struggle to get along at first because they are both stubborn by nature. However, when Ash and his Pikachu are attacked by Spearows and Pikachu is feeling unwell, Ash becomes concerned, and it becomes apparent that both of them are bonded closely despite their conflicts.

Ash and his Pikachu become more closely bonded over time, eventually becoming supportive best friends, like when Ash throws himself in front of Pikachu to protect him from enemy attacks or jumps off of cliffs to save Pikachu, as seen in "Pokémon – I Choose You!" or "A Guardian Rematch!." Even though Pikachu does not speak human language, Ash can still interpet Pikachu's facial expressions and gestures and understand it accordingly. Ash respects Pikachu's wish not to evolve and remains confident in Pikachu's capabilites, which is evident from Ash using it against several Gym Leaders and in other Trainer battles, even when Pikachu has a type disadvantage. When Pikachu is injured or sick, such as from being overloaded by electricity, Ash shows how much he cares for Pikachu, looking after him and immediately searching for help. In cases where Pikachu loses control due to external influences, Ash is the only character who can calm Pikachu and stop it, even if Pikachu's electric shocks endanger him, like in "Get the Show on the Road!."

His other Pokémon

Ash initially wants to catch as many Pokémon as possible on his journey, ideally more than his long-time rival Gary. Over time, Ash realizes that he only wants to catch Pokémon that appeal to him because of their personality, such as Infernape, or Pokémon that have bonded with him. Ash also owns a few Pokémon that have belonged to other Pokémon Trainers, such as Infernape, which belonged to Paul when it was a Chimchar, but Ash can still integrate Pokémon into his team, alleviate its fears, and emphasize its strengths, allowing it to evolve. Ash always trusts his Pokémon and relies on their abilities, so type advantages and disadvantages in battles are irrelevant to him, even though this has caused Ash to lose battles before.

Ash respects the desires of his Pokémon, such as those that do not want to evolve, over becoming a Pokémon Master, which is why Ash's Pokémon value him and give their all for him. Ash even traded his Aipom for Dawn's Buizel, a difficult decision on his part, as Aipom prefers to participate in Pokémon Contests but Buizel prefers to fight.

Starting in Hoenn, Ash trains his Pokémon cautiously, seeing them as equal partners, specifically for Gym battles and the Pokémon League, and teaches them new moves like Aerial Ace and Iron Tail. To strengthen his Pokémon, Ash sometimes puts them in the care of other Pokémon Trainers if he believes it is in their best interest, like with Ash's Charizard and Ash's Gliscor. Ash has also released some of his Pokémon to the wild if it meant that Pokémon would have a better quality of life, such as his Butterfree to join some other Butterfree. Saying goodbye is always difficult for Ash, who cries at most of them, an emotional reaction rarely seen by him.

Brock and Misty

Ash is initially unimpressed with Misty, the first of his traveling companions, but promises to pay for a new bicycle, after Pikachu destroyed her old one accidentally. Ash is more concerned about Pikachu's condition, and he has refused help from Misty several times. At one point, Ash did not appear to want to travel with Misty and even ran away without paying for the broken bike.

Brock is Ash's longest traveling companion, and the two have traveled together throughout Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. Ash values Brock's maturity, his cooking skills, and his talent for dealing with Pokémon.

Over time, Ash's friendship with Brock and Misty is valued increasingly. Ash needs encouragement and advice from Brock and Misty when participating in battles, and Ash has risked his life to save them from danger. Misty and Ash have shared a few romantic moments, which are ruined by Ash's inability to react tactfully. Arguments often break out between Ash and Misty, as both are stubborn and hot-headed.

When Misty and Brock stopped traveling with Ash, this upset him. Ash has remembered Misty and Brock during his later journeys, such as when he initially traveled alone with Max and May in Hoenn. Ash always carries the lucky charms he received from Misty and Brock when they left. Ash is very happy whenever he meets Misty again, and they argue less often, making the most of their time together.

May

Ash acts as a mentor to May and has taught her the basics to being a Pokémon Trainer. Even though May is often clumsy, acts recklessly, and makes mistakes, Ash remains patient with her. Ash and May have argued before, but not to the extent that Ash and Misty have; one such instance occurred during their first Double Battle together, but the two of them have reconciled.

Ash was surprised at first by May's decision to become a Pokémon Coordinator, but he continues to support May and always encourages her when she encounters setbacks.

Max

Ash cares about Max and is not annoyed by Max and his know-it-all attitude, like May. Ash was forgiving to Max when he ran away with the Balance Badge upon Max's disappointment that his father, Norman, lost a Gym battle to Ash. Even when May announced the end of her travels with Ash, meaning that Max had to return with her, Ash manages to cheer up Max by promising that they will always be friends and will compete some day in the future.

Dawn

Dawn, Ash, and Brock in "The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!"

Ash has had a very good relationship with Dawn from the start, even as the two begin journeying together. There are few moments when Ash and Dawn have disagreements, similar to Ash and May, but these are usually resolved by Brock or one of Dawn's Pokémon. The friendship between Ash and Dawn is reflected when they traded Aipom and Buizel based on each Pokémon's preference for Pokémon Contests and Pokémon battles, respectively. Ash always supports Dawn to achieve her goal of becoming a Top Coordinator and often engages in sparring matches with her.

Iris and Cilan

Ash, Cilan, and Iris in "All for the Love of Meloetta!"

Unlike May and Dawn, Iris is no beginner, having been around Pokémon since childhood, so she knows how to handle them and does not Ash's help in this regard. Both Pokémon Trainers respect each other greatly, but occasionally argue, as in "The Path That Leads to Goodbye!," because both short-tempered. Ash and Iris always get along and continue to respect each other.

Cilan also holds Ash in high regard. He rarely seems annoyed by his assessments, as Iris is, and admires him for being an expert in so many different fields.

Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie

Ash and his companions in Kalos in "Till We Compete Again!"

Ash and Serena have known each other since childhood, although Ash does not remember her at. Ash was very supportive of Serena when they were young, which could be due to her affection for him. It often seems as if Serena is in love with Ash, but the feelings are not reciprocated by Ash. In "Under the Pledging Tree!," Ash gives Serena a blue ribbon, showing that he supports her goal of becoming a Top Performer and how good of a friendship they have. In "Till We Compete Again!," Serena kisses Ash after saying goodbye to everyone, to Ash's surprise.

Ash is also very nice to Bonnie and hardly seems annoyed by her. In "Battling with a Clean Slate!," Ash cheers Boonie up when she misses Blobby.

Ash always admires Clemont for his inventions, even if they explode and do not have the desired effect. Ash also values Clemont as a Gym Leader, so he promises to give his all in the Gym battle against Clemont. The two have a final Pokémon battle each other one last time as a farewell.

Lillie, Kiawe, Lana, Mallow, and Sophocles

Ash has a friendly relationship with all of his classmates from the Pokémon School. The students help each other and support each other even with family problems.

Ash fulfills the role of a mentor, especially for Lillie, whom he helps overcome her fear of touching Pokémon, but Ash has also been a role-model to Kiawe. Ash often encourages Lillie and inspires her with his ambition and love of Pokémon, which is why Lillie thanks Ash again their journey together ends.

Ash and Kiawe often compete and engage in various contests to determine who is the better Pokémon Trainer, and the two often train together and promise to compete against each other again sometime before they leave.

Goh

Ash often takes on the role of a mentor to Goh, teaching him how to catch Pokémon in "Working My Way Back to Mew!," and the nature of battles between Pokémon Trainers in "Serving Up the Flute Cup!."

Although Goh's perspective initially differs significantly from Ash's, which becomes clear in "Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower!" when Goh tries to stop Ash from helping a wild Ivysaur reach higher ground, the two boys quickly become friends and form a brotherly duo.

Ash and Goh often support each other and share common goals on their journey together. Ash helps Goh with catching new Pokémon, and Goh accompanies Ash to the battles in the World Coronation Series.
