Accompanied by [[Alba#In the anime|Alba]], Ash and Pikachu reach ''[[Kalos, Land of Dreams and Adventures!]]'', more specifically: [[Illumina City]]. There, Ash encounters [[Clemson (anime character)|Clemson]] and his sister [[Benedict (anime character)|Benedict]]. Ash and Clemont agree to a battle, but the battle is interrupted by [[Team Rocket (anime)|Team Rocket]]. Ash is protected by a Froakie, which is seriously injured in the attack. Ash takes the Froakie to the laboratory of [[Professor Sycamore#In the anime|Professor Sycamore]], where it is able to fully recover. After helping Ash calm a rampaging Garchomp, it joins the young trainer from Pallet Town. On the way to [[Nouvaria City]], Ash, with Froakie's help, catches the robin Pokémon [[Ash's Talon|Dartiri]].

In ''[[A Stormy Nouvaria Gym Battle!]]'', Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie reach Nouvaria City and meet the new Trainer [[Serena (anime character)|Serena]], whom Ash has known since their first encounter at the Pokémon Summer Camp in Pallet Town as children. Ash loses his first Gym Battle against the Gym Leader [[Viola#In the anime|Viola]], but in the rematch in ''[[Never Give Up!]]'', he wins after special training and receives his first Kalos Badge. In the same episode, Serena joins the group.

After his first Gym battle, Ash catches [[Ash's Reveler|Reveler]] and a [[Ash's Aragon|Aragon]], while Froakie evolves into Amphitheatre and Dartignite into Dartignite and finally Talon. Aragon also evolves into an Aragon soon after being caught. After the Gym battle against Clemont, Ash leaves it with Keanan so that it can protect its home. Ash also finds an [[Ash's Eeveelution|Egg]] Egg. Eeveelution later evolves into Eeveelution. With his team Pokémon, Ash easily wins the next six Badges.

In the episode ''[[A Festival of Decisions!]]'', his [[Ash's Greninja|Amphitheatre]] evolves into [[Greninja (Anime)|Greninja]] and, for the first time in this episode, transforms into a special, mysterious form known as "Ash-Greninja". From now on, Ash's and his perceptions merge, so that they can see what the other sees. However, Ash initially has problems with this fusion, as he often collapses when Ash-Greninja is hit by enemy attacks. After losing the first Gym Battle against [[Galantho#In the anime|Galantho]], Ash retreats to the forest alone to think. Finally, in ''[[Seeing the forest for the trees!]]'', he remembers why he wanted to become a trainer, and he and Greninja master the transformation to [[Puponcho (anime)|Puponcho]]. In the next episode, he also manages to defeat Galantho and qualify for the Kalos League. There, Ash defeats, among others, Sawyer, a rival who sees Ash as a role model and has fought him several times before. However, he is defeated in the finals by his friend Alain, thus finishing second.

After the League, Team Flare attacks Illumina City with the Z2 they control in order to carry out their plans. Ash faces Alain and fights him before he disappears. In the battle against the Megalithic Zygarde, Ash, Alain, Greninja, and Charizard manage to rescue Michaela's Igami, which has been absorbed. After Team Flare is defeated, Ash decides to return to Pallet Town some time later. He leaves Viscongo in its homeland in ''[[The Great Gathering!]]'' and releases Greninja so that it can use its senses to erase the effects of Team Flare's experiments with both [[Zygarde (anime)|Zygarde]]. In ''[[What a Wonderful Time!]]'', Ash, Bonnie, and Clemont first say goodbye to Serena, who kisses him before departing for the Hoenn region. Later, Ash also departs and returns to Pallet Town.

In the episode ''[[Alola, New Adventures!]]'', we learn that Ash and his mother have won a vacation to the Alola region, and he travels there with her. They bring an egg, which [[Professor Samuel Oak#In the anime|Professor Oak]] gives them for his cousin [[Henry Oak#In the anime|Henry Oak]]. He runs the [[Alola Trainer School#In the anime|Pokémon School]] on [[Mele-Mele]]. Ash meets the students [[Lillie#In the anime|Lillie]], [[Kiawe#In the anime|Kiawe]], [[Sophie#In the anime|Sophee]], [[Lanai#In the anime|Lanai]], [[Lanai#In the anime|Lanai]], [[Lanai#In the anime|Lanai]], and [[Maho#In the anime|Maho]], with whom he quickly becomes friends and who show him around. Several exciting experiences, such as a battle against [[Team Skull]] and an encounter with the [[Alola's patron saint|patron saint]] [[Tapu Koko]], ultimately lead to Ash deciding to stay in Alola and attend the Pokémon School, while his mother travels back to [[Alabaster]]. Ash seems to have been chosen by Tapu Koko, so it gives him a [[Z-Ring]]. The [[Electron Z]] breaks, however, after the first use of [[Gigavolt Spark Barrage]]. Ash therefore decides to go on an [[Island Wandering]] to find a new Z-Crystal.

In ''[[Dex Activated!]]'', a [[Rotom (Anime)|Rotom]] moves into Ash's new PokéDex, giving him a Rotom Dex. Soon after, Ash catches his first Alolan Pokémon, [[Ash's Rowlet|Root]]. The boy then encounters [[Ash's Incineroar|Root]] for the first time in ''[[A Rascal Named Litten!]]'', which only joins him in ''[[An End Can Be a Beginning!]]''.

After his victory against the ruler Pokémon [[Manguspector (Anime)|Manguspector]], Ash receives a [[Normium Z]] before defeating Island King [[Hala#In the Anime|Hala]] in the following Grand Trial, receiving a [[Battalium Z]] as his prize. However, Tapu Koko appears and trades it for a Voltium Z, giving Ash the Z-Crystal again.

In ''[[Uproar at Claw Hill!]]'', Ash captures [[Ash's Lycanroc|Ruffle]], which had previously been in Professor Kukui's care. Ash receives a [[Bottom Z]] in the episode ''[[A Tasteful Challenge!]]'' after defeating [[Mantidea (Anime)|Mantidea]]. In ''[[Retested Even Better!]]'', Ash defeats the island queen [[Mayla#In the anime|Mayla]] and learns that Rockabilly will soon evolve. Due to a special moon position, it evolves into the Twilight Forme of [[Lycanroc (Anime)|Lycanroc]].

In the episode ''Alola, Kanto!'', Ash travels with his classmates on a field trip to Kanto, where he reunites with his friends Misty and Brock, who have now mastered Mega Evolution. Ash defeats the former in an official Gym battle, after which the Gym Leader declares that he has officially earned the Source Badge.

In ''A Dream Encounter!'', Ash finds a Cosmog, which he and his classmates call "Cloudy." Fabian from the Æther Foundation is after it, but the children, with Gladion's help, are able to protect it for the time being. Over time, Cloudy evolves into a Solgaleo. With his help, Ash and company rescue Samantha, who was killed by Anego, an Ultra Beast. After the rescue, Solgaleo says goodbye. In Anego, an Ultra Beast, Ash and his classmates are finally appointed Ultra Guardians by Samantha, as she considers them capable of capturing the Ultra Beasts appearing in Alola. Ash is the first to capture [[Masskito (anime)|Masskito]], before capturing [[Ash's Agoyon|Venicro]] in ''[[Love at First Sight!]]'', which accompanies him from then on as a team member.

Finally, Ash goes to [[Ula-Ula]] to take part in another island trial. After his defeat in the first battle against [[Yasu#In the anime|Yasu]], which was considered a preliminary trial, the boy decides to train under [[Tapu Bulu (anime)|Tapu Bulu]]. In ''[[A Rematch in Absenteeism!]]'', Ash finally passes the trial devised by Yasu, in which he battles [[Jessie's Mimikyu]]. During the battle, it learns [[Electro Web]] and uses Thousandfold Thunderbolt again. In the following episode, there is a rematch against Yasu, which Ash wins this time. He receives a [[Wolwerockium Z]].

In the episode "[[An Island Exploration with Sharpness!]]," Ash and his classmates travel to [[Poni]] to complete specially chosen projects as part of a field trip. Ash's project is to pass an island test. He succeeds in doing this in the episode ''[[A Grand Debut!]]'' by defeating the newly crowned island queen [[Hapu'u#In the anime|Hapu'u]]. She lets Pikachu choose a Z-Crystal as a prize. Pikachu chooses a [[Metalium Z]], giving Ash another crystal. When Ash was pulled through a time portal by [[Celebi (anime)|Celebi]] in the episode ''[[A Timeless Encounter!]]'', he received a [[Pyrium Z]] from the ruler Pokémon [[Trombork]] after Ash chased away the [[Wombles]] that had sought refuge with him.

In ''[[Battle Royal 151!]]'', the [[Alola League]] finally begins, in which Ash, his classmates, and several other friends participate. Ash survives the preliminary round, a [[Battle Royale]], with Pikachu's help. After defeating [[Fabian#In the anime|Fabian]] in the first round, [[Ash's Rowlet]] [[Tali#In the anime|Tali's]] manages to defeat [[Silvarro (anime)|Silvarro]]. Ash now faces [[Bromley#In the anime|Bromley]], against whom he had previously been helpless in ''[[The Merchant of Destruction!]]''. Here, too, the young trainer prevails and thus reaches the finals – where he faces none other than his rival Gladion.

The battle begins in ''[[Rivals to the Finish!]]'' with Pikachu's victory against [[Gladio's Melmetal]], which had previously defeated Ash's newly evolved [[Ash's Melmetal|Melmetal]]. After a draw between the Electric-type Pokémon and Gladio's Zoroark, a Lycanroc showdown ensues. [[Ash's Lycanroc]] prevails after a tough battle. Ash wins and wins an official league, which also exists in the games, for the first time. Ash is happy for his Pokémon and proud of their achievement. Gladio congratulates him, and they both exchange friendly respects. At the awards ceremony, he receives the trophy and thus bears the title of the first [[Champion]] of [[Alola]].

After the Manalo Conference ends, Ash is unsure what to do next. However, after being told by [[Mayla#In the anime|Mayla]] that it is important to understand the wider world, he decides to return to Pallet Town and travel the world. After saying goodbye to his friends in ''[[Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!]]'', he boards the plane to Kanto, leaving all of his team Pokémon—except Pikachu—in Professor Kukui's care.
