Super Mario World has a total of 96 levels, and unlike other games, some contain secret exits, which open passages to new paths and secret levels. There is a world map like in Super Mario Bros. 3, except the player can now replay completed levels (excluding fortresses), which is required for levels with more than one exit and unlocking more paths on the world map.

The game has a tie-in television series, co-produced by DiC Entertainment and Nintendo, that originally premiered on September 14, 1991, only a month after the game released in North America. The show takes place in Dome City.

Super Mario World received a remake for the Game Boy Advance titled Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, first released in Japan in 2001, then in English-speaking countries and Western Europe in 2002. Afterward, the original Super Mario World has been ported directly several times, especially during the 2010s. The was first ported to the Wii Virtual Console in Japan in 2006, then in several other countries in 2007, and lastly South Korea on April 26, 2008. Super Mario World was next ported to the Wii U Virtual Console in April 2013. The game was ported a third time to the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in 2016. It is one of twenty-one games included on the Super NES Classic Edition and its Japanese counterpart, the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom. Super Mario World is one of the titles featured on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online, for which it released on the day of launch.

There is a playable demo of Super Mario World in the Masterpieces of both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Plot

After saving the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Luigi go to Dinosaur Land for a vacation. While on the beach, the Mario Bros. realize that Princess Toadstool has disappeared, so Mario and Luigi go on a journey to find her. While exploring a forest, Mario and Luigi come across a large egg, which hatches a young dinosaur named Yoshi, who informs that Mario Bros. that his other Yoshi friends have been captured and imprisoned by the Koopa Troop. Mario and Luigi immediately realize that Bowser and the Koopalings have returned. Besides looking for the princess, Mario and Luigi also help Yoshi rescue his friends, each trapped in an egg in one of the seven Koopalings' castles. Mario and Luigi eventually make it to Bowser's Castle, where they face against Bowser, whom they eventually defeat, saving the princess again.

From the instruction manual:

After saving the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser and the rest of the Koopas in Super Mario 3, Mario and Luigi needed to recuperate from their adventures. Together they agreed that the best place to vacation was a magical place called Dinosaur Land.

But while Mario and Luigi reclined on the beach for a relaxing nap, Princess Toadstool disappeared, apparently seized by evil forces. After searching for hours for their missing friend, Mario and Luigi came upon an enormous egg in the forest.

Suddenly the egg hatched, and out popped a young dinosaur named YOSHI, who proceeded to tell Mario and Luigi a sad tale of how his dinosaur pals were sealed in similar eggs by a group of monstrous turtles.

"Monstrous turtles!,[sic]" exclaimed Luigi. "Bowser and his bunch have returned!" Mario slowly nodded his head in agreement and, along with Luigi and Yoshi, set off across Dinosaur Land to find the Princess and to free Yoshi's friends. As they began their journey, Yoshi handed Mario a beautiful cape. "This may help you," Yoshi said. "Some say it has magical powers."

With a little luck (and help from a magic cape), our hearty crew can defeat the seven worlds of Bowser's Krazy Koopa Kritters. Many locations are well-hidden so explore everywhere and try everything. Not all locations have to be explored to rescue the dinosaurs and save Princess Toadstool, but there are many "starry" treasures to be found in far-reaching places. You'll need to search all areas to find what kinds of treasures are there... in Super Mario World.

Gameplay

Title screen

Super Mario World has several additions that are not in its predecessor, Super Mario Bros. 3. Besides regular jumps, Mario or Luigi can also perform a Spin Jump, which is not as high but is necessary to defeat some enemies and destroy Rotating Blocks.

In single-player, Mario is the only playable character, but in alternating two-player co-op mode, the second player controls Luigi. In co-op, each player takes a turn doing a level.

Yoshi

Certain blocks contain an egg, from which a Yoshi hatches. Yoshi is featured mostly in the Green color, but the Red, Blue, and Yellow varieties all appear in Star Road.

All Yoshis can use their long tongue to eat berries and most enemies. Yoshi can jump on spiked enemies like Spinies and Spike Tops without getting hurt. If Yoshi is hit, he runs away, but Mario or Luigi do not receive damage. Mario or Luigi must jump on Yoshi's back to continue riding him. If Yoshi falls into a pit while running, Mario or Luigi cannot recover him during the level unless there is another block containing a Yoshi Egg.

Yoshi can drag Koopa Shells into his mouth and receive certain abilities, depending on the color of the Koopa Shell. The Green Shell does not give Yoshi any powers, and Yoshi can spit it out to slide along the ground. The Red Shell allows Yoshi to spit out three fireballs at once. The Blue Shell gives Yoshi the ability to fly, until he either swallows the shell or spits it out. The Yellow Shell makes Yoshi heavier and causes him to produce damaging sand clouds upon landing. If a Red, Blue, or Yellow Yoshi has a Koopa Shell of any color in his mouth, he always gain the capabilities of a Red Shell, Blue Shell, and Yellow Shell, respectively.

There are Wings located in a few of the blocks, and if Mario or Luigi touch them while riding Yoshi, they transport into a Coin Heaven.
