Help:Template

From PikloDex
Jump to navigationJump to search

A template is a small piece of code that can be embedded into an article. It usually results in adding some fixed information (that won't change) to simplify the process, rather than having to copy between several articles, although it can have other yses, such as specifying image licenses. They are added with the code {{name of the template}} at the beginning of an article.

If you need to create a template to work with or need help with an existing one, feel free to post your request on the talk page.

Article editing templates

{{Expand}}

This article is too short for what could be written about it. You can expand this article by filling in the missing information.
Template information
Use this template when you find an article that you feel is too short for what could be written about it. The template can be removed if a sufficient amount of information is available to describe the subject. Even then, if a lot of information is filled in but some sections are still missing, add {{incomplete}} and add specific information.

Articles using this template are automatically added to Category:Expand.

{{Delete}}

Attention: This page has been proposed for deletion.

An administrator or assistant will review it shortly.

Template information
Use this template when you want an administrator to delete an article, an image, or any page in general. Just enter this code at the top of the page: {{Delete|Reason for deleting this page}}

You can add a reason to why the page should be deleted. Something like "vandalism" or "unrelated" is sufficient, since the reason would usually be obvious.

If the page contains profanity or offensive content, you can remove the rest of the content, leaving only the template. This will also hide the content.

This template inserts pages into Category:To be deleted automatically.

{{Rewrite}}

This article needs to be rewritten to improve its quality. The proposed solution is as follows:
» Usage: {{Rewrite|add a reason}} «
Template information
Use this template if you find an article with several grammatical errors. If there are only a few, it's best to correct them yourself or find the author in the history and notify them on their talk page.

You can also use this template to request that the article be properly formatted; i.e., this means converting a large block of text into something organized and presentable, with sections, categories, bold and italics, lists and tables, etc. (see Help:Editing guide).

It is used by simply adding: {{Rewrite|add a reason}}

Articles that use this template are automatically added to Category:Rewrite.

{{Incomplete}}

This article has the essential information, but some details are missing. You can help by editing this article by filling in missing information. Any contribution will be appreciated.
Template information
This template is used to indicate that an article is mostly complete, but some details are still missing, such as complete lists or more specific sections.

The template is similar to {{expand}}, except articles using this template have a lot more info and is not missing a general overview of the subject. As such, the two templates usually go hand in hand, so if one removes the Expand template, this template could still be necessary.

This can used by simply placing it at the beginning of the article:

{{incomplete}}

You can provide specific information on what is missing by filling in the first parameter:

{{incomplete|Missing information}}

The template should only be used for visible details, empty sections, or unfinished lists, but it should not be used for simple supplementary details, such as a section of sentences that a character says. If you find any of these details missing, you can add them yourself or discuss them on the talk page.

Articles using this template are automatically added to Category:Incomplete.

{{Move}}

Attention: It has been proposed that this page be renamed.
An administrator will review if it is necessary.
» New title: Usage: {{Move|add name}} «
Template information
Use this template when you want an administrator to rename an article. Just enter this code at the top of the page: {{Move|New title}}

"New title" is the title that you are requesting the page be renamed to.

{{Image}}

This article either needs at least one image, is lacking images to illustrate its content, or has some sections with missing images.
Template information
Use this template when you think an article could use images to illustrate some of its content. It is used simply by inserting {{image}} at the start of the article.

If you see this template in an article and are uncertain as to why it's there, ask in the discussion, so you are recommended to specify the improvements in the first parameter: {{Image|Missing ''Pikmin 2'' screenshots}}

Articles using this template are automatically added to Category:Image requested.

{{Construction}}

This article is currently under construction, i.e. being edited by another user. It may appear incomplete or contain errors. You can check the page's edit history to lessen the likelihood of edit conflicts.
» User: Example (talk · contribs) «
Template information
Use this template if you're going to be editing an article for a while. It lets other users know that the article is being worked on by you, so while you're working, the article may have gaps or be disorganized. It also lets other users know that it is advisable not edit the article to avoid a higher risk of edit conflicts.

To use the template, place the following at the start of an article: {{construction|Your username}}

{{Merge}}

This article has been proposed to be merged with another article.
For more information, see the talk page. » Article: [[Usage: {{Merge|article title}}]] «
Template information
Use this template when you think the information in two articles is very similar and could be combined into a single article. Place this template in the article that needs to be merged with the other, like this: {{Merge|Article to merge}}

After adding the template, indicate in the discussion why the merge should be done, what the articles share, and what they don't so that user who merges the content will have an idea on how to do it.

When merging, indicate in the edit summary where you are merging content from and finally redirect the other article to the new one (see Help:Redirects).

Note that we typically try to not merge articles together, so this template should only be used seldomly.

Articles using this template are automatically added to Category:To merge.

{{News}}

This article discusses an upcoming subject, so the article may be incomplete and/or information may change rapidly as more becomes available.
Template information
This template is used on articles with information about an upcoming event or product.

Image templates

All images must have a copyright template, even if they are released under a free license, like the public domain.

If you have an image and none of these templates work, you can request in the talk page that a decision be made on whether the license could be used here and create a template for that license.

To submit a template, include it in the image description when uploading it, or select it from the list of licenses below the upload form.

You must choose from the following:

{{PD}}

Public domain
This image or multimedia file is part of the public domain, either from being transferred by its author, because its copyright has expired, or since the characteristics of the image do not allow it to be copyrighted. This is valid internationally.
