Cousteau is a frog villager introduced in Dōbutsu no Mori. He appears in every game of the Animal Crossing series to date except Animal Crossing: Wild World.
His catchphrase is "yes yes" in French.
Appearance
Cousteau is a yellow frog with orange spots. He also has a black mustache on his face that goes with his French and Chinese appearance. He has white on the tips of both hands and a brownish hue on his feet. His initial clothes is a tee shirt. He can be mistaken for a cranky villager due to his adult appearance.
Personality
Cousteau is a jock who enjoys exercising and criticizing others for their physical condition, making him appear competitive and challenging. He will have a hyperactive and motivated attitude, but will often act selfishly and annoyingly. Despite this, he is friendly to the player. His conversations will typically focus on sports and his muscles. He will be clumsy and absentminded when it comes to deep conversations. He will get along well with other jock villagers, but may be confused by lazy villagers due to his laid-back lifestyle. He may offend or annoy cranky villagers.
House
In Animal Crossing and Animal Crossing: City Folk, Cousteau has many items from the Exotic Series, such as the exotic bed and the exotic screen. He also uses the exotic wall and exotic rug tiles. In Animal Crossing, the music that plays in Cousteau's house is K.K. Reggae. From Dōbutsu no Mori e+ onward, Cousteau's house plays Imperial K.K. to complement the Asian architecture.
Cousteau's house in Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a little different from previous games, now having an Asian restaurant feel due to the revolving table, salad bar, and revolving spice rack. It still has furniture from the Exotic Series, such as the table and two screens, as well as the exotic rug and exotic wall.

Trivia
- His species relates to the common French stereotype where frogs are a type of food, specifically frog legs. Like Cousteau, Gaston and Marcel are French.
- However, Cousteau being labeled as French only exists outside of Japan, where he is labeled as Chinese.
- He is the eldest of seven children.
- He is afraid of bugs, somewhat ironically since frogs eat them.
- Whenever Cousteau's e-Reader card is scanned, it includes his name and his catchphrase in his french accent:
"Haf I said somesing wrong? Zee last time I tried to speak to you, you turned your head in anger. Why ees zees? Oui mon ami, I mees you!"
